The application allows you to identify birds through images in a special mode that shows images in poor quality and through their song when using the voice recorder.

Picture Bird is an application for Android and iOS that allows you to identify birds by image or song. Available on the Google Play Store and the App Store, the app is free, but it has a paid version. The app features a “Birds Nearby” feature, which allows the user to see which species have already been recorded or may be living in their area.

In addition, it can also be ideal for identifying endangered species and interacting with nature. See below how to use Picture Bird.

Install and start your free trial

Step 1. Search for Picture Bird in Google Play Store (Android) or App Store (iOS) and install it on your mobile phone. After installation, open the app.

Step 2. To access Picture Bird, you need to sign in with a Google account. Once you sign in, the option to start your free trial will appear. It is possible to skip this screen by pressing the “X” in the upper right corner.

Step 3. If you’re still on the list, the app will explain how the free trial works. To exit, press “X”. To continue, click Start Free Trial, which is highlighted in orange. After that, a menu for adding a payment method will appear. After adding the card, just click “Sign Up”. As the app shows, it is possible to cancel the subscription up to the sixth day for free.

Select the bird with the camera

Step 1. After closing the Free Trial tab, the app will open its main menu. To identify some types of birds with the camera, select the “Identify” option. In this list, the chosen bird is the earwig.

Step 2. When you open the camera, the app shows tips to take photos correctly. Click OK to use the camera. To photograph the bird, you must frame it within the square that will appear on the screen of your cell phone. After framing, press the capture button. You can also upload images from the gallery or use sample images from the app itself.

Step 3. After taking the photo, the app will analyze the photo to answer what kind of birds were photographed.

Step 4. Once the bird is identified, the app displays further photos and information below, such as size, scientific name, colors, and whether it is endangered. In addition, there are other options for the species to which the bird may belong.

Step 5. After selecting the correct species, press “Save” to add the bird to the collection, “New” to take another photo, or “Share” to show your find to your friends.

    Learn about birds by sound.

Step 1. In addition to the two image options, the app allows you to identify birds by sound. To do this, simply select the “Corner” option in the definition menu. The song used in this example would be the black song of Anu.

Step 2. After selecting the “Singing” option, tap on Record. It is necessary to record at least five seconds of audio to identify the song.

Step 3. You need to record at least five seconds of audio to identify the song. After exceeding this time, click the “Pause recording” option. Once you pause the recording, the app begins to identify the bird.

Step 4. Once the download is complete, the application shows the bird that the recorded song belongs to.

Determine the results of the application.

Step 1: If you are unsure whether the application returned the correct bird, or you are sure that the specified type is incorrect, you can correct the output. To demonstrate this function, we will use the John D’Arrow bridge.

Step 2. None of the three available options matches john.

Step 3. Next to the third option, there is a question mark. In this tab it is possible to select the correct species of birds captured. To do this, click Fix Result.

Step 4. Enter the correct bird name in the search box at the top and select it once it appears in the options. Once the bird is selected, a tab will appear to confirm the identification. If this is correct, tap Confirm.

Step 5. Finally, wait for the confirmation tab to close.

    see “my collection”

Step 1. To view all registered birds, go to the “I” located in the lower right corner of the main screen. Once it opens, select a type to learn more. The example used would be “I want”.

Step 2. It is possible to share the selected bird with friends. Just click Share and then select the recipient. After selecting, just confirm the shipment.

    neighboring birds
Step 1. Those who want to see already detected birds near the location can access the “Birds Nearby” menu on the main screen. When opened, it will show the locations of some species or places where they are likely to be.

Step 2. After selecting a location, it is possible to see both confirmed species living in the area and those that are most likely to be found in the same location.

    Search bar and plugins

Step 1. Above the four menu options, the app has a search bar. In addition to writing, you can get information about common birds belonging to different groups, such as wild birds, waders, swimmers, songbirds, birds of prey, and colorful.

Step 2. Below the four options, the app contains additional information on how to identify a bird, its scientific designation, and instructions for using the app for identification.

The third step. By choosing ‘How to identify a bird?’, the application displays an informative text containing the main steps used by bird watchers.

Step 4. When selecting the “Scientific Nomenclature of Birds,” another informative text explains how scientists choose the names of each bird.

Step 5. When you choose “Help”, the informative text provides tips on how to take pictures of birds correctly.
